Electroplate Glass

As the development of electroplate glass technique matures, it has been more and more frequently used in the accessory field and they are also pursued by plenty of jewelry fans. This passage mainly aims to introduce how electroplate glass are produced and how they are used.

Many manufacturing professionals used to regard electroplating as a metal on metal process that is used to strengthen the metal, increase the anti-corrosion and wear ability or improve the appearance of a product. However, it is also possible to electroplate onto non-metallic surfaces. One commonly applied practice is electroplating various metals onto glass surfaces.

Plating on glass can serve many of the same purposes as when electroplating metal substrates. In addition, electroplating will  metalize  a glass surface, increasing the products durability and making it more amenable to additional finishing processes. Glasss inherent fragility poses a challenge when performing electroplating or any other steps. Pretreating the surface with metal powders is a typical glass electroplating preparation technique. Several methods are also available to make a glass substrate electrically conductive, which is essential for promoting coating adhesion.

Another commonly used application for plating onto glass involves coating the tempered glass with a layer of metallic or nonmetallic film in ways of distillation or splashing under vacuum condition. Electroplating will alter the surface of the tempered glass, which the anti-corrosion and wear ability and promotes electrical conductivity. Electroplating also applies a brighter, shinier finish, which enhances the appearance of the glass. In addition, the coating produced in this way is very thin with good adhesion. Also, it does less harm to the environment.

Electroplated glass are very shiny and it shines very different from normal glass. The light has more colors. In terms of accessories, electroplated glass is usually used in making cabochon stones and glass beads. The cabochons can be used to make pendants while the glass beads are regarded as necklace or earring components.
