The story of Dreamcatcher
The history of dreamcatcher can be dated back to 18th century. By then the Indians use them to filter bad dreams at night. They believe that the air in the evening is full of dreams, either good or bad ones. And a dreamcatcher will filter the bad ones so they can sleep well at night with a beautiful dream.
Traditional dreamcatcher is made with branches and ox tendon. They will use the branch to make a circle first and use leather to wind and over the circle. In the next step they will use oxford tendon to make a net in the circle. Sometimes they may thread some colorful spacer beads on it and then hang some feathers down the circle.
There will always be a hole in the middle of the net because good dreams will get through it and fall down the feather and into the sleeper’s brain and bad dreams will be filtered and trapped by the dreamcatcher and disappear in the next morning’s sunshine.
In terms of the ways of making a dreamcatcher, it is said that it is invented by a spider woman who is also a custodian of all the infants and the adults. Because there are more and more people needing her care and they are spreading all over the world, she invented the dreamcatcher. As long as people hang them beside their beds, she will protect you through it.
Whether the story is true or not, it is beautiful and very romantic. And thanks to the pretty and special design, now dreamcatcher is not only hung to the bed, but also to people’s ears and neck because they are also made into earrings and pendant necklace. Either way, it shows people’s desire and hope for a peaceful life.
