What is “Ethical Gold”?

During Basel world 2019, a concept called ethical gold has been put forward and has attracted much attention. Then what is ethical gold? According to Chopards official website, “ethical gold”are defined as gold acquired from responsible sources, verified as having met international best practice environmental and social standards. Then why ethical gold is related to environment and society? We collected some information and the answer are as follows.

You may have heard one country named Gahna. It is famous for the production of gold and is thus named Gold Coast. It alone accounts for 3% of gold production of the whole world and its annual output value is about 1.5 billion dollars. However, because their mining equipment and techniques lag behind, the vegetation there are heavily damaged during the mining process. At the same time, people their can hardly make their living even though they are working with one of the worlds most precious material.

The Fairmined Initiative was created by the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM), a non-profit organization globally recognized as a leader and pioneer of responsible artisanal and small-scale mining. ARM will cost 18-24 months to inspect the mining team or organization and support the eligible ones to get Fairmined authentication. Once confirmed, they will comply the rules of fairmined standards and help facilitate a positive social development and environment protection. At the same time, they will get a guaranteed fair price in return. Then the Trading company will re-allocate the funds internally rather than just inflating the purchase price of their products, the customers won’t feel much of a difference in cost. Thus while customers purchasing jewellries or watches, they can receive an assurance that the gold is responsibly mined and they are generating a positive impact with their purchase.
During Basel World 2014, Chopard launched worlds first watch made with ethical gold with a certification from South American Fairmined Organization. And during Basel World 2018, Chopard announced that all gold material they use in either watches or jewellery, included but not limited to earrings and necklaces, is  from responsible sources since July, 2018.
